Tracking

Tracking is the most important part of marketing, otherwise you might as well hand your money over to the first person who says they can sell your services.  Don't even waste your time reading the reports that they may or may not provide.  Use the methods below to track your own success.

Google Analytics

Google Analytics is a free service that can tell you an awful lot about your site visitors, including where they are located, how they found you, what pages they visited and how long they spent on your various pages.  In the past, you would have had to pay a Marketing Analyst to compile this information for you, and it would be subject to their capability.  There will be more information on Google Analytics on the following pages.  You can click here if you can't wait to learn more, but you really should finish reading this page.

Custom Domains

Any time that you run an offline ad, you can use a different or custom domain in each ad, so that you can track exactly how many people found your website as a result of that ad.  Let’s say we ran an ad on CNN, we could advertise the following domains:

http://1pointweb.com/cnn
http://cnn.1pointweb.com

We would then create a forwarder, which forwards the site visitor to our homepage in about 0.01 seconds, faster than anyone will notice.  Goggle Analytics will track everything you need to know about those site visitors.

Specials

“It is better to give than to receive” If you want to receive more information from you visitors/customers, offer them something in return.  Run web specials to ensure that people will go to http://1pointweb.com/cnn instead of just http://1pointweb.com.

Southwest Airlines is a good example of effective website usage.  They give online discounts, to motivate people to use their website.  This allows them to pay for the programming and running of their website, and it allows them to not have to pay as much for their human staff.  Go ahead and get mad about computers replacing humans, but once you’re over it, recognize that you need to do the same to stay competitive in your market.  It is not computers replacing humans, because humans have to write the programs and maintain the programs, databases and servers that this is all run on.  What it really is, is replacing 3 unskilled workers with one skilled computer professional.
